On the plus side to this rapid growth rate you can grow a very nice looking, good quality bonsai in a space of just two to three years.
Not all bonsai trees have small leaves but it is able to achieve this with constant trimming and defoliation. It is important for achieve these small leaves to keep the tree looking in proportion to its miniature size.
